Resident Spotlight - Audrey Krassowski Audrey Krassowski moved to The Highlands at Wyomissing® in July 2018. She was initially drawn to the community because of its continuing care options, an important consideration for her, as she didn’t want her family to worry about her. “I only wanted to have to change my address once,” she explained. After the loss of her husband, Audrey joined the Future Residents Club and remained on the waiting list for several years. But when a blizzard hit, she knew it was time. “It was a 30-inch snowstorm that sealed the deal for me,” Audrey recalled with a laugh. “I put the house on the market—and it sold quickly.” She moved into one of only two available apartments and is convinced she ended up with the best location in the entire community. In retirement, Audrey felt she needed some new hobbies, so she asked her mother to teach her to quilt. “My husband built me a frame, and we put it in the dining room,” she said. “My mother would come and stay with me for a few days, and we would sit and quilt together.” Today, she also enjoys embroidery, reading, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and baking. Audrey is an active member of the community, volunteering in the campus gift shop where she loves interacting with fellow residents. She currently serves as chair of the marketing committee and sings in the Highlands’ vocal group, the Highlandairs. Beyond The Highlands, Audrey remains deeply involved in her church, where she has sung in the choir and served as church council secretary for over 35 years. She is also leading the committee planning her church’s 175th anniversary celebration. A lifelong educator, Audrey taught at Exeter High School for 35 years and now hopes to spend just as many years enjoying her retirement. “I want to make it to 92,” she said with a smile. “That seems fair. And I want to be walking without a cane or walker until I’m 90.” Among her favorite experiences at The Highlands are the international meals. “I love them because I can eat in a country that I am never going to visit.” For those considering a move to The Highlands, Audrey offers simple but powerful advice: “Come while you’re in your best health so you can enjoy your life here and get around easily.” (fb)
