More than 2 in 5 Black women have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. However, when Black women defend themselves from abuse, they are often criminalized for it.⁠ It is crucial to understand and address how Black survivors of gender-based, intimate partner, and domestic violence are disproportionately criminalized.
