Starkweather Society
The Starkweather Society is a nonprofit organization based in Romeo, Michigan, dedicated to fostering and promoting the local art and artistic community. It operates under the legal name of Starkweather Society and is registered as a 501(c)(3) organization.
History
The society was incorporated in 1989, following the wishes expressed in the will of Helen Starkweather, a lifelong resident of Romeo. Helen Starkweather was an educator who taught art and drafting in the Romeo school system for over forty years. Upon her death in 1987, she left her estate to the Romeo Historical Society and the Village of Romeo, stipulating that her home and studio be used as an art and cultural center. This legacy led to the establishment of the Starkweather Arts Center in her former home and studio at 219 North Main Street, which officially opened to the public on November 13, 1999.
Mission and Activities
The Starkweather Society aims to promote and foster the appreciation of art and artisans, while supporting the preservation of the character and quality of the Village of Romeo. Its activities include operating art galleries, hosting art exhibitions, and providing art education programs. The center also engages in community events such as the annual "Romeo Art & Wine Walk," partnering with local organizations to enhance the cultural landscape of Northern Macomb County.
Structural Updates and Community Engagement
In recent years, the society has undertaken several building updates, including the restoration of the second-floor gallery and the transformation of the Carriage House into a Clay Studio. These efforts have allowed for the launching of an "Empty Bowl" fundraiser to support local food pantries. Structural issues have required regular maintenance to preserve the historic 1865 building.
Funding and Support
The Starkweather Society relies heavily on membership dues, volunteer efforts, taxpayer grants, corporate sponsorships, and donations from organizations like the Four County Community Foundation, Ford Motor Company, and Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. This support is crucial for sustaining its operations and fulfilling its mission to enhance artistic excellence in the community.
Tax-Exempt Status
The Starkweather Society received tax-exempt status in August 1997 with an Employer Identification Number (EIN) of 38-2864141.
