June 1, 1863 is an important day in #lowcountry #history. Today is the 162nd anniversary of the beginning of the Combahee River Raid; the largest Emancipation event of the Civil War. The raid extended through June 2nd, but not before almost 800 former slaves were rescued. (fb)
