Field Day 💚 In 2023, I eagerly signed up to volunteer at our middle daughter’s last day of school and Field Day. It was her final year of preschool and her first ever field day. When I signed up to volunteer, I didn’t know what the next couple weeks had in store. Gwen’s health quickly declined and she passed away on May 12th. Her funeral was held on May 18th. And Field Day was May 19th at 9:00am. We didn’t sleep the week Gwen passed nor the week following. Family was at our house until 9pm the day of her funeral. The morning of Field Day comes and my body wants nothing more to stay in bed and not face our new reality. But, I got up. Got dressed. Put on sunglasses to cover my puffy eyes and showed up to volunteer at the same place I buried my oldest child less than 24 hours earlier. Literally, Field Day was in the parking lot of the church. I could feel the stares. A friend said “you don’t need to be here- why don’t you go home and rest.” But I promised my 5 year old daughter I would be there and she needed her mom more than ever. And the truth is- I need my girls. Their busy schedules. Their routines. And a reason to be forced out of bed more than ever. Yesterday, I volunteered at that same Preschool Field Day for our youngest daughter. With a mix of so many feelings, I chose a smile and a Gwendolyn’s Gifts hat to bring Gwendolyn with me 💛 In life, choose kindness. We truly don’t know what others are facing. You could be amongst people that may have just experienced the worst moment of their life and are hiding behind sunglasses and a fake smile. 💛 (fb)
