We're in the last few days of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and wanted to share two groundbreaking individuals whose work inspires us to continue in ours. First, we're highlighting Dr. Roseli Ocampo-Friedmann, a Filipino American scientist who studied microorganisms in different extreme environments. Her work was supportive of the theory that life could exist on Mars, which has a similarly extreme environment to many on Earth. Her work can be seen in some of our Explore Ballona! Nature Camp lessons where we discuss the different things needed to support life on Earth and what life could look like on other planets! Secondly, we're highlighting Charles Lee, a Taiwanese-American activist and environmental justice steward. His work has been to highlight injustices in toxic waste development and disposal, and eventually to leadership roles in the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the past 25 years. His dedication to Environmental Justice inspires us at the Friends of Ballona Wetlands to continue in our mission to educate our diverse community as stewards of nature.
