Gerber/Hart Library and Archives
The Gerber/Hart Library and Archives is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to collecting, preserving, and making accessible the history and culture of LGBTQ+ communities, with a focus on Chicago and the Midwest. Founded in 1981, it is recognized as the largest circulating library of gay and lesbian materials in the Midwestern United States.
Mission and Vision
Gerber/Hart aims to advance the larger goal of achieving justice and equality by fostering understanding and constructive change in society through knowledge of LGBTQ+ history. The organization envisions a world where LGBTQ+ individuals and all members of society are treated with justice, equality, respect, and inclusion.
Collections and Activities
The library houses over 24,000 volumes, 800 periodical titles, and a diverse archival collection. It offers a range of public programs, including exhibits, lectures, panel discussions, and film screenings. These activities serve to explore and celebrate LGBTQ+ history and culture.
History
The organization was named in honor of Henry Gerber and Pearl M. Hart. Henry Gerber founded the Society for Human Rights in Chicago in 1924, which aimed to educate the public about the gay community and challenge anti-gay laws. Pearl M. Hart was a civil liberties attorney and strong supporter of gay rights. Over the years, the library has moved several times due to an expanding collection, with its current location in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood.
Recognition
In 1996, Gerber/Hart was inducted into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame, reflecting its significant role in preserving and promoting LGBTQ+ history. Despite being a private nonprofit, it has received public funding for its operations.
Organizational Structure
Gerber/Hart relies heavily on community involvement and volunteers. It has a small full-time staff and more than 30 volunteers who contribute to its operations and programs.
