BOCA GRANDE WOMAN'S CLUB INC
The Boca Grande Woman's Club Inc. is a nonprofit organization based on Gasparilla Island, Florida. Founded in 1948 by 25 women, the club quickly became a major force in the community, fostering a vision for the island's development and welfare.
History and Mission
The club has a rich history of community involvement and philanthropy. Initially, it organized public events such as Christmas and New Year's Eve dances and supported the establishment of the Boca Grande Health Clinic. One of its significant early endeavors was the annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony.
Over the years, the club has focused on educational and environmental initiatives. It played a key role in promoting a fresh water system for the island, replacing the outdated cistern system in 1966. This project not only improved water quality but also enhanced community participation by encouraging residents to work together towards a common goal.
Major Accomplishments
-
Community Center Development: The club was instrumental in converting the former Boca Grande School into the Boca Grande Community Center. This transformation took place in collaboration with other local organizations and Lee County in 1975, providing a central hub for community activities.
-
Scholarship Program: Since its inception in 1982, the club's scholarship program has awarded over $2,500,000 to more than 250 students, predominantly supporting education for children of island families or those working on Gasparilla Island.
-
Environmental Projects: The club contributed to enhancing the island's environment by supporting initiatives like the development of the bike path and the purchase of the Mercabo property.
Ongoing Programs
-
Community Events: The club organizes several annual events, including the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony, Spring Fair and Bike Parade, and the BGWC Dog Show, which takes place every other year.
-
Boca Bargains: This thrift store is a significant part of the club's fundraising efforts, operating from late November to mid-April.
Affiliations and Awards
Initially, the club was affiliated with the General Federation of Woman's Clubs and the Florida Federation of Woman's Clubs. Although it no longer maintains these affiliations, it has received state and federation awards for its community work.
Membership and Impact
Today, the club has over 350 members who are dedicated to building a stronger community through volunteer work. Its focus remains on supporting local non-profit organizations, promoting education, and preserving the island's unique character.
