Plant of the week! This week: Myrmecodia tuberosa Also known as the Ant Plant! Native to Southeast Asia, This myrmecodia is an epiphytic plant, often found clinging to sides of trees. What makes this plant particularly interesting is its relation to ants. The ant plant has evolved to form a symbiotic relationship with ants. Inside the caudex are what resembles tunnels of an ant farm, the perfect home for ants! In exchange for a place to stay, the ants offer their nutrient-rich frass as well as security. If the plant were to be attacked or threatened by an animal, the ants would swarm to its defense! 🐜 🪴 (fb)
