What’s in a name? The Wampanoag People of southeastern Massachusetts called wild cranberries “sasumuneash.” When Europeans arrived in New England during the 16th and 17th centuries, they used various names for the fruit. The most common was “crane berries,” inspired by the flower’s resemblance to a Sandhill crane’s head. Eventually, “crane berry” was shortened to “cranberry.” (fb)
