🌊 Achievement Alert: New Roots Institute fellow Kacey Fifield helped secure a sponsor for North Carolina’s first-ever bill to ban octopus farming. In collaboration with Animal Rights Initiative, the campaign is a response to a Spanish seafood company's plan for a new octopus aquaculture project—posing a risk of the initiative spreading to the U.S. 🌎 The introduction of a new species in a concentrated farm environment could disrupt ecosystems by decimating crab populations, polluting local water sources, and spreading new disease variants to native octopus species. 🚫 All of this motivated Kacey to get to work outlawing the practice in South Carolina.
