Miami Rowing and Watersports Center
The Miami Rowing and Watersports Center, commonly known as the Miami Rowing Club (MRC), is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the sport of rowing and water sports for all ages and abilities. Founded in 1973 by a group of veteran Cuban exiles and local novice rowers, it has become a premier rowing club in Miami.
History
The club was originally located south of the airport but was relocated to the Marine Stadium in 1979 at the request of the City of Miami. A boathouse was built in 1983, marking a significant milestone in its development. Over the years, the MRC has attracted veteran rowers from US colleges and novices alike, fostering a community passionate about rowing.
Community Involvement and Programs
The organization places a strong emphasis on youth development, offering a variety of rowing programs for middle school and high school students. These programs include novice and varsity levels with daily practices, ensuring that young rowers can grow and compete in local, state, regional, national, and international competitions. Additionally, the MRC offers adult and masters programs, "Learn to Row" sessions, and summer camps.
Mission
The mission of Miami Rowing and Watersports Center is to promote rowing and educate its benefits across all demographics. It focuses particularly on youth development and scholarships, aiming to ensure that its programs are inclusive and representative of the local community. The organization also emphasizes teamwork, self-confidence, and environmental stewardship through activities like semi-annual basin clean-ups.
Youth Scholarship Program
The MRC has a dedicated youth scholarship program, providing financial support to young rowers who need assistance. This initiative helps ensure that the sport is accessible to everyone, regardless of financial status, and reflects the organization's commitment to community involvement.
Environmental and Community Engagement
Beyond rowing, the MRC participates in community service projects, such as cleaning up waterways. This focus on environmental stewardship aligns with its mission to promote a healthy and sustainable lifestyle for its members and the wider community.
