The organization began in 1996 when a group of singers participated in the 200-voice Freedom Festival Chorus under Cedar Rapids conductor Charles Ashford. This initial collaboration sparked a desire among the singers to form a new group, leading to the creation of The New Midwest Chorale in 1997. The ensemble's first rehearsals were held under the direction of Charles Ashford, with its debut performance taking place in January 1998.

Initially, the group aimed to maintain a maximum size of fifty-five voices, with ambitions to perform both regionally and internationally. From 1997 to 2000, the Chorale was led by directors Charles Ashford, Gene LeVasseur, and Bruce Chamberlain. As the organization grew artistically, it dropped "New" from its name at the start of the new millennium to become Chorale Midwest.
