Diabetes Technology Society
Overview
The Diabetes Technology Society (DTS) is a nonprofit organization established in 2001 by David C. Klonoff, M.D. Its primary mission is to promote the development and use of technology to assist patients with diabetes. DTS spearheads collaborative efforts between academia, clinical practice, industry, and government to accelerate the development of practical technologies for the treatment, monitoring, diagnosis, and prevention of diabetes mellitus and its complications.
Activities
DTS is actively involved in organizing several scientific conferences annually. These include:
- Diabetes Technology Meeting
- Clinical Diabetes Technology Meeting
- European Clinical Diabetes Technology Meeting
The conferences cover a range of educational objectives such as:
- Cybersecurity for Diabetes Devices: Understanding the role of cybersecurity in the medical device industry, particularly for diabetes devices.
- Artificial Pancreas Development: Discussions on the technology and market release of the Artificial Pancreas.
- Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs): Exploring the benefits of CGMs compared to self-monitoring of blood glucose.
- New Insulin Technologies: Covering advancements like inhaled insulin, biosimilar insulin, and glucose-responsive insulin.
- Insulin Pump Therapy: Addressing the latest developments and benefits of insulin pump systems.
- Social Media Impact on Diabetes Management: Examining how social media can aid in managing diabetes.
- Mobile Apps for Diabetes Management: Discussing the role of mobile apps in enhancing diabetes care.
- Diabetic Foot Treatments: Identifying new treatments and future directions for diabetic foot care and limb salvage.
Achievements
DTS has achieved significant milestones in its mission to improve diabetes care through technology:
- Post-Market Surveillance System: In 2013, DTS received support from the FDA for a proposed post-market surveillance system to test the accuracy and quality of self-monitoring blood glucose systems. This program was launched in 2014 to independently assess blood glucose monitors for accuracy following FDA clearance.
- iCoDE Standard for CGM Data Integration: In 2022, DTS announced the iCoDE standard, a consensus standard for integrating continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data into electronic health records (EHRs). This initiative aims to simplify CGM data integration, enhancing patient care and treatment outcomes.
Publishing
DTS publishes the bi-monthly peer-reviewed journal, Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology, which covers various technologies related to diabetes management, including glucose monitoring, insulin delivery, and bioengineered solutions.
Collaborations
DTS collaborates with numerous organizations such as the FDA, American Diabetes Association, The Endocrine Society, and Association for Advancement of Medical Instrumentation to develop new standards and initiatives in diabetes technology.
