Our cool March made for a slow start, but April is already full of beauty around Historic Seattle’s grounds. Let us take April to appreciate the tiny and delicate accents in our gardens. Fawn Lily is a gift of the season that fades as temperatures increase. The pink flowers bloom on delicate arching stems that are borne from basal leaves. The leaves have splotches of dark green against lighter green that make for added seasonal interest. Purple Willow ‘Nancy Saunders’ put off soft, tiny, pod-like structures. These flowers might not be as obvious as others this time of year, but they are such a treat when you spot them densely covering bare branches. Although not tiny, Red Trillium can be elusive. In the northwest, we are used to seeing white Western Trilliums peeking through forest understory. These Red Trilliums are putting on a show at the Good Shepherd Center. They are native to the Eastern coast of the U.S. #historicseattle #whatsblooming (fb)
