In the newly updated exhibition case at the center focusing on the Dust Bowl era, visitors will find a copy of Sanora Babb’s novel "Whose Names Are Unknown." Born in Kansas and raised throughout the Midwest, Babb drew on her family’s experiences and her work with the Farm Security Administration (FSA) to write her account of Dust Bowl life. The book was originally slated for publication by Random House, but after John Steinbeck’s "The Grapes of Wrath" gained widespread attention, Babb’s manuscript was shelved and remained unpublished until 2004. It should be noted that FSA supervisor Tom Collins provided Babb’s field notes to Steinbeck while he was writing "The Grapes of Wrath."
