Southern Plains Land Trust Inc.
The Southern Plains Land Trust Inc. is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the shortgrass prairie ecosystem in the Southern Plains region, often referred to as "America’s Serengeti." Founded in 1998, the trust's mission is to create a network of prairie wildlife refuges, ensuring the future of native animals and plants in this threatened biome.
Mission and Activities
The Southern Plains Land Trust focuses on buying and restoring land to provide refuge for diverse grassland animals and plants. As of recent reports, the trust has protected over 60,000 acres of native grassland, divided into several preserves in southeastern Colorado. These preserves not only safeguard crucial habitats but also support biodiversity and wildlife migration by creating corridors for natural processes.
Conservation Efforts
The trust employs a strategy of rewilding, where natural processes are allowed to shape the landscape, restoring degraded habitats and promoting biodiversity. This approach involves removing fences to enhance wildlife mobility and collaborating with local communities to support conservation education and employment opportunities.
Educational Outreach
Southern Plains Land Trust engages in educational outreach, particularly with local school groups, to foster understanding and support for prairie conservation. It partners with community organizations to promote environmental stewardship and hosts events to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the prairie ecosystem.
Preserves
The trust manages several significant preserves, including Heartland Ranch, Fresh Tracks, and Raven's Nest Nature Preserve. These areas are crucial for species like pronghorn, bison, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets. SPLT's largest preserve, Heartland Ranch, spans approximately 43,000 acres and is home to reintroduced bison and other wildlife.
Conservation Impact
By protecting these large tracts of land, the Southern Plains Land Trust contributes significantly to halting the loss of biodiversity in the shortgrass prairie, which is among the most threatened habitats in North America. Over 50% of the original shortgrass prairie has been lost to human development, making the trust's efforts vital for preserving this unique ecosystem.
