The Village School of North Bennington
Overview
The Village School of North Bennington is an independent, nonprofit school providing Pre-Kindergarten through Sixth Grade education in North Bennington, Vermont. Established in 2013, it succeeds the historic North Bennington Graded School, which served the community since the mid-19th century.
History
The North Bennington Graded School, predecessor to the Village School, had a long history of excellence in education. However, in response to statewide pressures to consolidate school districts, the community voted to transform it into an independent academy with a public mission. This transition allowed the school to maintain its unique qualities and provide residents with school choice options.
Mission and Philosophy
The Village School's mission emphasizes creating a nurturing environment where children feel safe and secure, essential elements for successful learning. It adopts a whole-child approach, focusing on social, emotional, physical, mental, and intellectual growth. The school also promotes place-based education, integrating local history, culture, and ecology into its curriculum.
Programs and Partnerships
The school offers comprehensive programs in art, music, library, and technology, as well as physical education. It partners with local institutions like Bennington College for foreign language instruction and provides special services for students with unique needs. The Village School's approach includes hands-on learning experiences that foster student engagement and community involvement.
Governance and Accreditation
The school is governed by a Board of Trustees and is accredited by the Association of Independent Schools in New England (AISNE). This accreditation reflects the school's commitment to high-quality educational programs and continuous improvement.
Enrollment and Financial Model
The school serves approximately 150 students, predominantly from the North Bennington Graded School District and Shaftsbury District 1. Residents of these areas attend tuition-free, while out-of-district students may enroll on a tuition basis. The tuition fee for non-resident students is approximately $14,730 annually.
Community Impact
By operating as a town academy, the Village School combines the benefits of independent governance with a public mission, ensuring a quality educational experience for all attendees. This model allows residents school choice options and contributes to the preservation of local educational excellence.
