Alpha Chi Omega Fraternity, Inc.
Overview
Alpha Chi Omega Fraternity, Inc. is a national women's fraternity established on October 15, 1885, at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. The organization is built on the principles of empowering women to reach their full potential and live as their true selves. It is a member of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) and has more than 140 active collegiate chapters, 170 active alumnae chapters, and over 300,000 lifetime members across the United States.
Founding and History
Professor James Hamilton Howe, dean of DePauw’s School of Music, encouraged seven young women—Anna Allen, Olive Burnett, Bertha Deniston, Amy DuBois, Nellie Gamble, Bessie Grooms, and Estelle Leonard—to form the fraternity. Initially, the name was derived from the Greek alphabet with "Alpha" and "Omega" and "Kai" (meaning "and"), which was later changed to the Greek letter "Chi." This name choice reflected their belief that they would be both the first and last such organization within the music school.
Principles and Mission
The fraternity's mission is to advance the "intellectual, social and moral culture" of its members. Its guiding principles include academic interest, character, financial responsibility, leadership ability, and personal development. Alpha Chi Omega emphasizes creating a supportive environment where women can grow, lead, and serve.
