Suburban Golf Club
Suburban Golf Club is a private, nonprofit social club located in Union, New Jersey. It has been in operation since 1896 and is designated as a 501(c)(7) Social and Recreational Club by the IRS.
History
The club was founded in 1896 by a group of residents from Elizabeth, New Jersey, initially known as the Suburban Club of Elizabeth. The Certificate of Incorporation was filed on March 23, 1896. While golf was not the primary activity at first, it became a central focus over time. In its early years, the club underwent several relocations and expansions, eventually settling on its current site in Union Township.
Golf Course
The club's golf course was notably designed by renowned architect A. W. Tillinghast in 1922. The course features 18 holes, measuring a total of 6,525 yards with a par of 71. The layout includes narrow tree-lined fairways and well-bunkered greens. In 1999, a major restoration by Ron Prichard preserved the original integrity of Tillinghast's design while modernizing the facilities.
Membership and Governance
Suburban Golf Club operates as a non-profit membership corporation with approximately 230 golf members. It is not open to the general public for membership or services, reflecting its private nature. The club prides itself on its diverse membership and historical significance within New Jersey's golf community.
Financial Operations
As a nonprofit, it generates revenue primarily through membership contributions and the public use of its facilities. Donations to the club are not tax-deductible. The club employs around 108 individuals to manage and maintain its facilities.
Events and Competitions
Suburban Golf Club has hosted several notable golf tournaments, including state championships and qualifying events. It maintains a strong presence in the regional golf community.
Legacy
The club holds a significant place in American golf history, being one of the oldest clubs in the country. Its preservation of a Tillinghast-designed course and its commitment to maintaining historical golfing traditions make it a unique institution in New Jersey's golf scene.
