The Shepherd's Center of Richmond

The Shepherd's Center of Richmond is a nonprofit, nondenominational organization based in Richmond, Virginia. It was founded in 1984 as a local affiliate of the national Shepherd's Center of America network. The organization focuses on empowering older adults to remain active, independent, and engaged through lifelong learning and community service.

Mission and Vision

The organization's mission is to encourage older adults to stay active and independent by providing them with enrichment programs and opportunities for volunteer service to their peers. Its vision is to see older adults helping one another remain active, independent, and engaged.

Programs

The Shepherd's Center of Richmond offers a variety of programs to support its mission:

  1. Open University: A lifelong learning program featuring volunteer instructors from Richmond's university and professional communities. It offers eight-week sessions during the fall, winter, and spring. Classes take place at multiple locations in Richmond, including St. Luke Lutheran Church and Lakeside United Methodist Church.

  2. Lunch and Life: A free four-week lecture series held in the fall, winter, and spring. It is open to the public and aims to provide both educational and social engagement opportunities.

  3. Travel Opportunities: The organization offers local and long-distance travel opportunities for older adults, including one-day tours and overnight trips.

  4. Volunteer Transportation: The Shepherd's Center provides free round-trip transportation to medical appointments and grocery stores. Unlike public or commercial transport services, this is driven by volunteers who offer personalized, door-to-door assistance.

Governance and Operations

The organization is largely driven by volunteers, with a small staff dedicated to guiding volunteers and managing day-to-day operations. This volunteer-driven approach plays a crucial role in the center's ability to serve the aging community effectively.

Values

The organization values the potential of older adults to teach, learn, grow, and give back to their community. It emphasizes the health benefits of staying active and avoiding social isolation. The organization strives to serve the aging community with respect and compassion while fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity. Efficient management of resources is also a key value.

History and Impact

Since its founding, The Shepherd's Center of Richmond has become a vital part of the local community. It provides older adults with meaningful opportunities for lifelong learning and volunteer service, addressing challenges such as transportation needs and social isolation. The organization's long history has established it as a key player in supporting active aging in the Richmond area. In recent years, significant milestones, such as the relocation to a more accessible office, have further expanded its capacity for growth and community engagement.
