Upper Valley MEND
Upper Valley MEND is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering a diverse and engaged community by meeting the basic needs of individuals and families facing economic challenges in the Upper Wenatchee Valley region of north central Washington state. Established in 1988, it aims to provide equitable access to food, housing, wellness, and economic security for all members of the community.
Mission and Vision
The organization's mission is "Meeting Each Need with Dignity," envisioning an empowered community where everyone has equal access to essential resources. Upper Valley MEND serves low- and moderate-income families and individuals, seniors, children, and those dealing with crisis situations, addiction, mental illness, and homelessness.
Programs and Services
-
Community Cupboard: This food bank operates as a shopping-style pantry, offering essential food supplies to individuals in need without geographical restrictions. It is a model for success in the region, serving as a financial and food support hub.
-
Community Harvest (Gleaning Program): Upper Valley MEND harvests excess or unmarketable produce from local orchards and farms, distributing it through the Community Cupboard and reducing food waste.
-
Das Thrift: Provides low-cost clothing and household goods. Proceeds from Das Thrift support the purchase of food for the Community Cupboard.
-
Financial Assistance: Offers vital support through rent and mortgage aid, transportation help, utility bill relief, and temporary housing solutions.
-
Housing Initiatives: Includes efforts such as the SHARE Community Land Trust for affordable homeownership. In 2023, the Solid Foundations Campaign aimed to increase affordable housing options, enabling more workforce members to reside in the area where they work.
-
Upper Valley Free Clinic: Operates a free medical clinic offering essential medical, dental, and vision services at Cascade Medical Center.
-
Jubilee Global Gifts: A Fair Trade gift store supporting artisans worldwide and helping fund local programs.
History and Affiliated Projects
Upper Valley MEND was founded through a cooperative effort by the local Ministerial Association, starting as a food bank supported by eight churches. Over time, it expanded to include additional services such as a thrift store and healthcare assistance. The organization has also been involved in projects like the Cornerstone Community Adult Family Home, which provides a loving home for adults with developmental disabilities.
Impact
Upper Valley MEND supports approximately one-quarter of the Upper Wenatchee Valley's population annually through various programs and services. The organization relies heavily on donations and volunteer efforts to continue providing essential support to those in need. Donations to Upper Valley MEND are tax-deductible, contributing to its ongoing mission to empower the community.
