Dante Alighieri Society of Washington

The Dante Alighieri Society of Washington is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Italian language and culture in the United States. As an official chapter of the global Società Dante Alighieri, it aligns with the broader mission of spreading Italian culture worldwide.

Mission and Activities

The Society aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Italian history, art, cinema, music, and life. To achieve this, it offers a diverse range of activities, including:

  • Italian Language Classes: For over three decades, the Society has provided comprehensive Italian language courses, catering to learners from beginner to advanced levels. These classes are taught by native Italian speakers and were initially conducted on the Seattle University campus, though they are now available online.
  • Cultural Events: The organization hosts bi-monthly presentations in both English and Italian, focusing on various aspects of Italian culture. It also sponsors special events throughout the year, such as the annual Christmas party.
  • Certification Programs: The Society is recognized as a test center for the PLIDA (Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri) certification exam, which is an official Italian language proficiency test.
  • Community Engagement: In addition to its formal programs, the Society organizes dinner meetings, conversation groups, and other social activities to encourage community interaction and cultural exchange.

History

The early roots of the Dante Alighieri Society of Washington date back to 1908, with Dr. P. DeDonato as its first president. DeDonato was a notable figure, recognized for his anti-fascist Italian radio broadcasts during World War II. The Society underwent significant reorganization in 1972 and has since grown into a vibrant community hub for those interested in Italian culture.

Organization

The Society operates with an Executive Board composed of officers and advisors, all of whom are elected annually at the Society's Annual General meeting. This governance structure allows for dynamic leadership and ensures the organization remains responsive to the needs of its members and the broader community.

Membership and Impact

Membership is open to anyone interested in Italian culture, regardless of ethnic background. The Society welcomes individuals from diverse backgrounds, promoting a shared love for Italy's language and heritage. Through its activities, it provides opportunities for cultural enrichment, language learning, and social connection, contributing to a richer cultural landscape in the region.

The Society's commitment to promoting Italian culture aligns with the broader goals of the global Società Dante Alighieri, making it a vital part of the international network dedicated to preserving and sharing the richness of Italian language and culture.
