In 2018, Katherine Bauswell was walking across the road to help a man who had wrecked his motorcycle. She didn’t hesitate to help someone in need—because that’s who she was. But as she crossed the street, she was struck by a car. She was airlifted to Erlanger, where she received multiple units of blood. Her injuries were severe—broken bones, a lacerated spleen—but thanks to those blood donations, she had a fighting chance. In March 2019, she was transferred to Grady due to complications from infections caused by failed skin grafts. Despite every effort, the infections became overwhelming, and we lost her in June 2019. My mom’s story didn’t end the way we hoped, but the blood she received gave us something priceless: time. Time to hope. Time to hold her hand. Time to say the things that needed saying.
