On 5 May 2025, the Israeli Government approved plans to replace the existing United Nations-led aid distribution system for Gaza with a new system under full Israeli control. If implemented, this would restrict humanitarian distributions to tightly controlled sites in Gaza, and only to pre-approved Palestinian recipients. This system would have grave consequences. Mass forced displacement would increase as more people are forced to move to receive aid. It could prevent vulnerable groups, like children and people with mobility issues, from accessing aid at all. The stakes could not be higher: 470,000 people are at risk of famine or death due to starvation. To date, the IRC and our partners have reached more than 24,000 children in Gaza through nutrition programming, and more than 180,000 people across our response. We are gravely concerned by the rapidly increasing risk of famine in Gaza, following the latest IPC update. The number of people at risk of famine or death due to starvation has nearly doubled.
