Meet our summer intern, Demi Seligman, a rising senior at James Madison University who is currently working on a degree in Communications and Public Relations with a minor in Humanitarian Affairs. Demi is interning with our Marketing & Communications Department while learning all about how the Chamber is the voice of business in Hampton Roads. Below, she shares a recap of her first few days with us! 🌟 Internship Kickoff at the Hampton Roads Chamber 🌟 Although my summer internship officially kicked off with just two full days in the office—May 20 and May 27—I’ve already gotten a strong taste of the fast-paced, collaborative environment that powers the Hampton Roads Chamber. As a Norfolk native, I was especially excited to begin this journey with an organization that plays such a vital role in helping my hometown thrive. Day One Highlights (5/20): I settled into my cubicle, met an office full of welcoming team members, and jumped right into a planning meeting for a joint PRSA x AMA event that the head of the Chamber’s Marketing and Communications Department, Lauren Roberts Carter was hosting. I also practiced the timeless intern rite of passage—postcard stamping (because even in the digital age, snail mail still fosters a feeling of camaraderie a thank you email simply can’t compete with). From there, I drafted a press release for the Small Business of the Year Award and wrote several new staff bios for the Chamber website. Day Two (5/27): This day was packed with insight. I attended meetings with Alisa Hegrenes from the Hampton Roads Alliance and Marcus Williams of Two-Twelve Media—both of whom offered valuable perspectives on regional business and media. I then finalized my first press release and began to work on another for the upcoming Military Recognition Reception. I ended my day with a meeting with Lauren and Emily Larimore, Marketing Relations Specialist, to discuss upcoming events and strategic priorities. 📆 Moving forward, I’ll be at the Chamber every Monday and Tuesday this summer—ready to write, learn, and contribute.
