JOIN US for History Talks at 7 PM CT Tuesday, June 10. To register for this free online event, visit www.sdhsf.org/events/. Istvan Gombocz, professor emeritus at the University of South Dakota, will present a talk titled “Germans in South Dakota and their Press.” The presentation will cover German-language newspapers in South Dakota before and during World War I. In 2024, Gombocz won the Herbert S. Schell Award for best article published in the previous year’s issues of the journal South Dakota History. The article, “A Menace to Peace and Progress,” details the suppression of the German language in South Dakota during World War I.
