The move to end sweeps that simply displace individuals is a critical step towards ending homelessness. However, Mayor Keith Wilson’s proposal offers both promising and challenging elements. With the goal of expanding shelter beds, it’s essential that we also develop a long-term strategy of supportive housing, mental health care, and addiction treatment. Simply increasing shelter capacity, especially with temporary 90-day stay limits, could risk creating a cycle where individuals are stuck in temporary solutions. Not to mention, the types of shelters he’s proposing does not meet the varying needs of everyone who’s unhoused. The proposed funding commitment of over $52 million must also prioritize equitable and sustainable solutions that empower people to rebuild their lives rather than just manage their survival. While we commend Mayor Wilson’s focus on reducing the disruptive impact of camp sweeps, we can’t overlook the fact that the shelter system alone is not enough. The commitment to working with various stakeholders like the @OregonLawCenter is a good start. However, there’s also a real need for more investment in long-term supportive housing programs that offer the stability needed to break the cycle of homelessness once and for all. It’s crucial that this approach doesn’t become a band-aid but a true, comprehensive strategy for long-term solutions. (fb)
