Memorial Day is observed for remembering and honoring military personnel who have died in service to the United States. Originally known as Decoration Day, the holiday came about after the Civil War to remember the soldiers who died in the war. General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic proclaimed May 30, 1868, as the first Decoration Day, a day to decorate the graves of Union troops. Over time, it progressed to include honoring American military personnel who died in all wars. In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, establishing Memorial Day as the last Monday in May, effective in 1971. This picture is from the courthouse display in 1973. (fb)
