PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation
Overview
The PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting education and leadership among exceptional undergraduate students of Hellenic descent living in the United States. The foundation aims to support these students through significant monetary awards based on academic merit and financial need.
History and Mission
The foundation's mission is to build a better America by fostering education and the values of Hellenism. It draws inspiration from the Hellenic tradition, which emphasizes the role of education in creating ideal citizens and advancing civilization. This aligns with the philosophical views of ancient Greek figures such as Aristotle, who stated that "Education is the best provision for life’s journey"[1].
Scholarships
Each year, the foundation awards a total of $250,000 in scholarships to outstanding students. The awards are divided into two categories:
- Twenty (20) Awards of $2,500: These scholarships are granted based solely on academic achievement.
- Twenty (20) Awards of $10,000: These are awarded to students who demonstrate both academic excellence and significant financial need[2][4].
Eligibility criteria include U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, Hellenic descent, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5, and enrollment as a full-time student at an accredited U.S. university or college pursuing a four-year bachelor's degree[2].
Governance and Selection Process
The foundation is administered by a Board of Directors and an Executive Committee, supported by an Advisory Board. An Academic Committee appointed by the Board of Directors is responsible for selecting scholarship recipients based on established criteria, ensuring an independent decision-making process[1][4].
Special Scholarships
The foundation also offers endowed scholarships, such as the Georgia Sfondouris Mitchell Music and Arts Scholarship and the Varlan, Man, and Anderson Family Scholarship. These special awards are part of the foundation's broader efforts to support students in various fields[4].
Events
The foundation hosts an annual Awards Ceremony & Gala to honor the recipients and celebrate their achievements. The event is typically held in June[3].
Symbolism
The foundation's symbol is Nike, the goddess of victory from ancient Greek culture, embodying the triumph and achievement they strive to foster in Greek American youth through education[1].
