Fontanelles ✨ After your baby is born, one of the things we check during the newborn exam is their fontanelles. These “soft spots” exist because the newborn’s skull consists of five major bones separated by cranial sutures, leaving several gaps. There are six gaps, which are composed of membranous connective tissue, and we call them fontanelles. There are two prominent fontanelles, the anterior and the posterior.
