Spring has sprung, and with it, an incredible influx of tiny, soon-to-be feathered friends. As the largest specialty wildlife rehabilitation center in Michigan and the only center admitting baby birds, our hands—and hearts—are full! At the season's height, we'll need to make room for more than 175 baby birds in our nursery. Each will need plenty of heat, love, and care—along with 28 feedings per day. And because there's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all diet, we tailor each patient's menu to their unique biology. That means plenty of live worms and insects, as well as berries and whole seeds (no kibble chow allowed!) Though most of our patients are songbirds and their close relatives—like aerial insectivores and woodpeckers—we also welcome a significant number of young waterfowl. In fact, we're the only facility in southeast Michigan to take in injured and orphaned ducklings and goslings on a large scale. None of this vital work would be possible without caring friends like you, as we run 100% on donations! In a heartwarming rescue, a Mallard hen and her 13 ducklings found themselves trapped in a fully enclosed courtyard of an assisted living community. Buildings surrounded the entire space, leaving no exit for the young family. Despite attempts to guide the mother through the hallway, she refused to lead her ducklings through the building. Knowing the urgency of the situation, a staff member gently moved the ducklings to a safe outdoor area and waited. Soon after, the mother found her way to them, and the family was reunited! This rescue highlights the importance of reuniting wildlife families. Young animals like ducklings depend on their mothers for survival, and no human care can replicate the nurturing she provides.
