Description

Hudson River Fishermen's Association

The Hudson River Fishermen's Association (HRFA) is a nonprofit organization committed to the conservation and protection of the Hudson River and its surrounding fisheries. Established in 1966 by a group of concerned citizens, scientists, and fishermen, the HRFA aims to promote the responsible use of aquatic resources and protect habitats.

History

The HRFA was founded by Robert H. Boyle, a writer for Sports Illustrated, and a group of local fishermen in Garrison, New York, in response to the industrial pollution of the Hudson River during the height of the industrial revolution. The association utilized existing environmental laws, such as the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1888 and the Refuse Act of 1899, to compel authorities to enforce pollution regulations. Over time, chapters of the HRFA were established, including a New Jersey chapter, which was initiated by Pete Barrett and friends in 1969.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the HRFA are to:

  • Promote Sustainable Fishing Practices: Encourage the responsible use and management of fish populations.
  • Protect Aquatic Habitats: Assist in efforts to prevent pollution and ensure the health of river ecosystems.
  • Advocate for Environmental Conservation: Engage in legal and community actions to safeguard the Hudson River and its resources.

New Jersey Chapter

The New Jersey chapter of the HRFA contributes to regional efforts by:

  • Organizing Community Events: Participating in events like the Meadowlands Sportsman Show.
  • Advocating for Policy Changes: Activism against harmful fishing practices, such as the netting of striped bass.
  • Financial Management: Operating as a 501(c)(3) organization with fundraising activities that support its mission.

Financial Operations

The HRFA is recognized as a nonprofit organization under the Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3), allowing donations to be tax deductible. Financially, the organization relies on contributions, program services, and fundraising events for its operations.

Impact

While the HRFA was at the forefront of early environmental movements that led to the establishment of more focused conservation groups like Riverkeeper, it continues to play a role in local environmental advocacy. Despite the formation of other powerful organizations like Riverkeeper, which emerged from the Hudson River Fishermen's Association and its affiliated Hudson Riverkeeper Fund, the HRFA maintains its focus on recreational fishing and habitat protection.
