Yume Japanese Gardens of Tucson
Yume Japanese Gardens, located in central Tucson, Arizona, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Japanese culture and heritage. The garden serves as a cultural center, offering a serene and educational environment for visitors to explore.
About the Gardens
Yume Japanese Gardens covers approximately three-quarters of an acre, featuring multiple gardens that showcase various traditional Japanese landscape designs, including a Zen contemplative garden, a stone and gravel garden, and a tranquil strolling pond garden with a large koi pond. These gardens reflect the ancient Japanese art of balancing natural beauty with human-made elements, creating peaceful and contemplative spaces.
History
The gardens were founded in 2013 by Patricia Deridder, who drew inspiration from her extensive time in Japan. Deridder, originally from Belgium, spent 15 years studying Japanese culture, earning university degrees in anthropology and archaeology. Her love for Japan's heritage and the healing aspects of Japanese gardens motivated her to create Yume, aiming to share these benefits with the Tucson community.
Mission

The organization also provides a haven of tranquility, offering therapeutic garden walks, which help to soothe and restore mental well-being.
Programs and Events
Yume hosts a variety of events and workshops designed to engage visitors with Japanese culture. These include traditional festivals, tea ceremonies, and classes in ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), origami, and other cultural arts. The gardens are also home to a museum exhibiting Japanese artifacts and an art gallery featuring local artists.
Cultural Significance
Yume Japanese Gardens plays an important role in the Tucson community by offering a unique cultural experience, fostering appreciation for Japanese heritage, and providing a peaceful retreat from urban life. Despite its small size, it is a unique cultural attraction in Tucson, striving to educate and inspire visitors about Japanese aesthetics and traditions.

Families mark the occasion by flying vibrant carp streamers (koinobori) and displaying samurai dolls—symbols of strength, perseverance, and hope for the next generation. At Yume Japanese Gardens, our own koinobori dance joyfully in the spring breeze, echoing these timeless wishes.
