Show up and support our youth @as220.youth as they push forward with FUTUREWORLDS even in the face of uncertain funding! https://as220.org/calendar?category=AS220+Youth (fb)

It gives me great joy to let you know that the Paul Krot Community Darkroom will be holding a grand reopening celebration and open house on Saturday, May 10th, from 2 - 4 PM! Details at AS220 Darkroom Grand Reopening! After having been taken offline at the end of 2022 to deal with facilities issues and equipment upgrades, the darkroom is back and ready to welcome seasoned photography vets, fresh newcomers, and curious folks who just want a peek at how a real darkroom functions! Swing by 115 Empire Street and get a tour, get your photo taken, check out photo prints from darkroom users, enjoy some snacks and beverages, and check out our membership options! AS220 staff member and photographer Noah Morrison has been hard at work for the better part of a year getting the space in tip top shape, with support from AS220 Property Managers Mike DeAmorim and Ayyub Diaz. We can’t thank them enough for their efforts. The darkroom is equipped with resources needed for working in the art of black and white film photography, offering access to a safe, clean, and organized space where film can be processed and enlarged prints can be made from negatives. Accommodating traditional formats ranging from 35mm to 4x5 film, the darkroom has also been used for work in alternative processes such as cyanotype, Van Dyke brown, wet plate collodion, and handmade emulsion. Contrary to the idea of a darkroom as a solitary space, ours provides access to community, bringing together hundreds of people to share ideas, knowledge, inspiration, and friendships. Founded in 1994 by recent RISD grads and then-AS220 residents Pamela Murray and Scott Lapham, the darkroom represented an evolution for AS220 as the organization grew into its new home on Empire Street. AS220 began offering affordable public access to art-making spaces and education, and it launched efforts to engage with Providence youth including those incarcerated at the state's juvenile detention facility, the Rhode Island Training School. Two programs that are now pillars of the creative community in Providence, AS220 Youth and AS220 Community Studios, can be traced back to the early days of our darkroom. Our darkroom is named after Paul Krot, a former professor of photography at RISD and the founder of Sprint Systems of Photography, who passed away in 1992. Sprint is still active manufacturing photochemistry in Rhode Island today, led by Paul’s partner Marlaine Noel. It would be impossible to list everyone who has made the darkroom a vibrant hub for over 30 years. We would like to acknowledge the following people: Scott Lapham, Pamela Murray, Marlaine Noel, Sprint Systems of Photography, Krystal Grow, Chris Anderson, Edwige Charlot, k. funmilayo aileru, Katie Gradowski, Britton Kroessler, Madison Emond, Sara Inacio, Andy Burgess, Breslin Bell, Kannetha Brown, David Dvorchak, Sam Thompson, Miguel Rosario, Norlan Olivo, Carlos De La Rosa, Justin Espinal, Edwin Pastor, Jose Navarro-Robles, Allam Mella, Lindsey Beal, Jim Benson, Carey Good, Aaron McLaughlin, Scott Alario, Danny Floyd, Denny Moers, Gaby Mollinedo, Michelle Mancone, Kia Davis, Patricio Coello, Imani Walters, Jonilka Calcano, Bryan Freire, Nick Freire, Wilson Aguilar, Chandelle Wilson...and hundreds, if not thousands, more.
