Establishment: Founded in 1980
Purpose: The Elyria Apple Festival is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting community spirit and enhancing the downtown area of Elyria, Ohio. It achieves this through the production of an annual festival designed to bring citizens together in a festive atmosphere.
History
The idea for the Elyria Apple Festival was conceived in the spring of 1980, inspired by The Pumpkin Festival in Circleville, Ohio. The founders, including Bill Fitch, Al Murphy, and Jon Bates, chose to focus on apples due to the local apple growers and the cultural significance of apples in American traditions, such as apple pie. The first festival faced challenges but was salvaged by the dedication of its leaders, including Lyle Crosby, who played a crucial role in its early years.
Activities
The Elyria Apple Festival is held annually over a weekend in late September. It features family-friendly events, including live entertainment, a car show, and activities for children. The festival also highlights local cuisine, particularly dishes made with apples. The event is supported by numerous volunteers and financial assistance from organizations like the Century Club.
Impact
The revenue generated by the festival is reinvested in the community. It has contributed to improvements in the downtown area, such as lighting for Christmas, a fountain, a gazebo, and a clock at Ely Park. These enhancements aim to promote Elyria as a vibrant community destination.
