#WaybackWednesday: Patrick Ferguson & His Revolutionary Rifle Born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland on May 25, 1744, Patrick Ferguson came from nobility—but his legacy was forged on the battlefield. After an early military career and a return home due to injury, Ferguson didn’t step back—he stepped forward with innovation. In 1776, he designed the Ferguson rifle, the first practical breech-loading firearm used by the British military. Unlike traditional muskets, this rifle could be reloaded while lying prone—making it faster, safer, and unlike anything seen before. Ferguson’s invention offered soldiers a critical edge, but it arrived too early for widespread adoption. He brought his rifle corps to America in 1777 and fought at the Battle of Brandywine, where he was severely wounded. Though the rifle saw limited action and his experimental unit disbanded, his design left a lasting impression on military history. Ferguson’s story ended at the Battle of King’s Mountain in 1780, where he was killed after refusing to surrender. Today, he’s remembered not only as a daring officer, but as a forward-thinking inventor.
