National Veterans Art Museum

The National Veterans Art Museum, previously known as the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to showcasing and studying art created by U.S. veterans from various military conflicts, including the Vietnam War. The museum's mission is to foster greater understanding of the impact of war through the collection, preservation, and exhibition of artworks by veterans.

History

The museum's origins trace back to the Vietnam Veterans Art Group (VVAG), which was formed in the early 1980s. The group's first exhibition, Vietnam: Reflexes and Reflections, opened in 1981 and garnered significant attention and acclaim. This success led to the establishment of the museum on October 12, 1986, by several emerging veteran artists and volunteers. Over time, the museum has expanded its collection to include artworks from veterans of World War II, Korea, the Gulf War, and the Global War on Terror.

Mission

The museum aims to inspire connection and dialogue about the effects of war and military service through art. It serves as a platform for veterans to express their experiences and for civilians to gain insight into the emotional and physical impacts of military conflicts. The museum offers a diverse range of artworks, including paintings, drawings, photography, and sculpture, which have been exhibited in numerous states and countries.

Exhibitions and Programs

The museum hosts various exhibitions and programs designed to engage visitors of all ages and backgrounds. These include educational tours, discussion panels, lectures, and drop-in arts workshops. Such programs not only provide an artistic outlet for veterans but also create meaningful experiences that bridge the gap between veteran and civilian communities.

Legacy and Impact

The museum is recognized for its powerful and moving exhibitions, such as the Above and Beyond installation, which originally featured 58,226 dog tags representing U.S. soldiers who died in Vietnam. This piece has been exhibited in prominent locations, including the Chicago Public Library. The museum continues to grow its collection and impact, offering a unique perspective on war and its effects through the eyes of those who have served.
