📍 New Historic Marker at 24 King Street 24 King Street is a Federal-style single house built c. 1786 for Elizabeth Saunders Elliott. Originally two stories over a raised English basement, a third story and hipped roof were added by 1888. Its south facing piazzas, Roman Doric columns, and unique lunette transom window reflect its original Federal design. Over the centuries, the home has welcomed a series of notable residents: • Eliza Elliott Drayton North and John Laurens North, descendants of the original owner • Agnes Smith, widow and relative, who kept it in the North family for 50+ years • Isaac Mazyck, a Huguenot bookkeeper whose family lived here into the late 1800s • Anna Gray Cart Brux and her husband Leon Sebastian Brux, Charleston wholesalers, purchased it in 1915 and it was kept in their family until 1999 In the early 2000s, restoration efforts returned the facade to its 1780s appearance, replacing Victorian elements with period-appropriate nine-over-nine windows. Stop by and see our newest marker the next time you’re on lower King Street, along with several other PSC markers within a block of 24 King Street. (fb)

PSC in the News 🗞️ The Preservation Society’s first-ever Carolopolis Award-winning project on Folly Beach was featured in The Post and Courier over the weekend. 🏝️ 508 East Ashley Avenue received a 2024 Resilience Carolopolis Award at February’s award ceremony for the rehabilitation of a c.1943 vernacular beach cottage. The Resilience Carolopolis celebrates projects that sensitively adapt historic properties to changing climate conditions while adhering to best practices for historic preservation and retaining the character and integrity of the structure. 🏠 The project team behind 508 East Ashley Avenue embraced these principles and honored the original character of the house while employing sensitive design strategies to mitigate flooding and withstand storm events. As a result, the legacy of the Woods family, who built and occupied this early Folly Beach cottage, was elevated in more ways than one. 🌊 One of the property’s owners, Tift Mitchell, told the paper that “he submitted the house for a Carolopolis Award to show the hard work that goes into preserving a building, and to emphasize you don’t have to knock one down to create something beautiful and usable by today’s standards.” The Preservation Society hopes 508 E. Ashley Avenue is the first of many Carolopolis Award-winning projects on Folly Beach and sets a new standard for both resilience and preservation on the island. Congratulations to project team members Tift Mitchell, Joe Lobert, Taylor and Alyssa Gates, @archerconstructionsc, and @coastalcreekdesignchs, and thank you to the Woods family for sharing the story of this special property. ⭐️ Do you feel your project is worthy of a Carolopolis Award? Nominations open next month! Become a member today to stay up to date on this year’s nomination process. (fb)
