This past week, Africa and the world lost a literary giant: the legendary Ngugi wa Thiong'o. In his honor, here are a few quotes from members of our AGOA community who loved and were influenced by his work. "It is with deep sadness to received the news of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s passing. His legacy runs deep, especially for those of us who were shaped by his writings during our school years. His booklets were more than just academic material—they were a mirror that reflected our true identity, our struggles, and our strength as Africans. Through his fearless storytelling and unwavering commitment to African languages, he gave us permission to be proud of who we are. He taught us to resist mental colonization, to speak boldly, and to write our own stories. His words planted seeds of courage and consciousness in our hearts that continue to grow even today. Ngũgĩ was not just a literary giant—he was a revolutionary spirit whose impact went far beyond the classroom. He inspired generations to think freely, to question oppressive systems, and to fight for justice using the power of words. We mourn his loss, but we also celebrate the incredible life he lived and the indelible mark he left on this world. Rest in power, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o. Your voice will echo through history. Your legacy will never die." "RIP Ngugi.. Africa has lost another incredible legend who has shaped literature not only in African but in the world. In an interview with CNN, he once said, "Knowing all the languages of the world and not knowing your own is enslavement, and knowing your own language and knowing all other languages of the world is Empowerment. Since that time, he chose to write in his own native language .. Hopefully, such intentional writers continue to emerge in our community together continue the work 🙏🏿" "I have not given much thought to the concept of "favorite writer." Between the plethora of genres, the fact that different things hit differently at different times, and the fact that "One Hit Wonders" are a dime a dozen in literature; I've found the exercise rather tedious. That said, if pushed to do it, I'd probably say Ngugi wa Thiong'o. I think that "A Grain of Wheat" may be my favorite novel of all time. The eponymous character in "Matigari" is one of the most fascinating protagonists I've read. 'Decolonizing the Mind' is a staple on my graduate reading lists. "I'll Marry when I Want" is, well, relatable content😅 It is with great sadness that I learnt of Mwalimu Ngugi's passing. A Giant has fallen, indeed. Rest in Peace. We will do our best to continue walking the path you charted ✊✊" "This is indeed very very sad. He was one of my favourite writers and read many of his books during my school years and he was a true inspiration . May his soul rest in eternal peace 🤲🏽" As you can see, Ngugi was beloved and influential, and his legacy will loom large for literary eternity. May he rest easy. (fb)
