What’s going on: Last month the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) announced a proposed rule to rescind the regulatory definition of “harm” under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) to weaken environmental safeguards. Research shows that habitat protections are crucial to the recovery of an endangered species, so this proposed change will set back recovery efforts of not just the critically endangered Southern Resident killer whales, but ALL endangered species. Today is Endangered Species Day, and there is still time left to help protect the Endangered Species Act! If passed, this will be a huge blow to the recovery efforts of the Southern Resident killer whales and all other endangered species. This proposed change is open for public comment until 5/19/25.
