In response, a group of music enthusiasts in Fort Worth, Texas, including Dr. Irl Allison and Grace Ward Lankford, conceived the idea of hosting an international piano competition in Cliburn's honor. The first competition took place in 1962, and by 1976, the organization's name was changed to the Van Cliburn Foundation to reflect its expanded mission and programming.
