Sigma Chi Fraternity
Overview
Sigma Chi Fraternity is a prominent collegiate fraternity founded on June 28, 1855, at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. It was established by seven undergraduate men who sought to create an organization that emphasized the principles of friendship, justice, and learning. The fraternity has grown to become one of the largest and most influential fraternities in the United States, with chapters across North America.
Founding History
The origins of Sigma Chi can be traced back to a significant disagreement within the Kappa chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) at Miami University in the fall of 1854. A dispute arose concerning the election of a member to the Erodelphian Literary Society, leading to a division among the fraternity's members. The conflict escalated, resulting in the expulsion of six members, including Benjamin Piatt Runkle, Isaac M. Jordan, James Parks Caldwell, Franklin Howard Scobey, Thomas Cowan Bell, and Daniel William Cooper, who felt strongly about their principles regarding fairness and brotherhood.
In April 1855, these six men began organizing a new fraternity. They were later joined by William Lewis Lockwood, a non-member of the DKE. This group, constituting the founders of Sigma Chi, formally established the fraternity in June 1855. The fraternity's first badge, the White Cross, was designed by Runkle and Lockwood during this period, symbolizing the ideals that the fraternity would stand for.
Core Values
Sigma Chi is built upon three core tenets: friendship, justice, and learning. These values guide the fraternity's mission, promoting camaraderie among its members while encouraging individual growth and the pursuit of justice in all interactions. Members adhere to the Jordan Standard, which encapsulates the fraternity's expectations regarding character and conduct.
Growth and Influence
Since its founding, Sigma Chi has expanded significantly. As of recent reports, there are over 240 active chapters and thousands of initiated members across North America. The fraternity has produced notable alumni, including influential figures in various fields such as sports, politics, and entertainment.
Cultural Impact
The fraternity's emphasis on inclusivity and support for diverse opinions has shaped its identity. The "Spirit of Sigma Chi" reflects a commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for individuals from various backgrounds. This ethos has been integral to the fraternity's culture and has contributed to its lasting legacy within college communities.
Sigma Chi continues to thrive as a significant organization in the landscape of American fraternities, maintaining its commitment to the principles laid out by its founders over 160 years ago.
