The Wetlands Initiative
Overview
The Wetlands Initiative (TWI) is a nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to restoring and promoting wetland ecosystems in the Midwestern United States. Incorporated in 1994, it began operations in 1995 and is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. TWI is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation committed to improving water quality, increasing wildlife habitats, and enhancing biodiversity through wetland restoration and innovation.
Mission and Vision
The mission of TWI is to design, restore, and create wetlands by innovating, collaborating, and employing sound science. The organization aims to enhance water quality, habitat for plants and wildlife, and climate resilience. Its vision is a world with plentiful healthy wetlands that improve water quality, climate, biodiversity, and human well-being.
Projects
TWI is recognized for its extensive restoration projects, particularly in the Midwestern United States. One of its notable projects is the management of the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge, located near Hennepin, Illinois. This site, once drained and farmed for over 75 years, was purchased by TWI in 2000 and restored to its natural state. By 2004, it was designated as an "Important Bird Area" by the National Audubon Society, and in 2012, it was recognized as a "Wetlands of International Importance" under the Ramsar Convention.
TWI is a leading partner in the restoration of Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, focusing on rare and endangered habitats. Additionally, TWI collaborates in major restoration projects in the Calumet Region, including the Indian Ridge Marsh in Chicago and a 2,000-acre corridor of the Little Calumet River in Northwest Indiana.
Innovations
TWI also focuses on innovations to promote large-scale wetland restoration. It emphasizes the use of wetlands to reduce nutrient pollution and improve water quality, collaborating with agricultural partners to install constructed wetlands that mitigate agricultural runoff. This "Smart Wetlands" project aims to address issues like the Gulf Coast dead zone by encouraging farmers to adopt sustainable practices.
Recognition and Impact
TWI's projects have received regional, national, and international recognition. It is recognized for efficient use of resources and is highly rated as a charitable organization. As a leader in wetland restoration, TWI continues to innovate and collaborate with a variety of organizations to advance wetland conservation and science in the Midwest.
