Last week at our Restoring Hope Breakfast, a few of our workers were in the room, including Kevin Coats, who stole the show! Thanks to our partnership with Summit Academy OIC, we had the privilege of supporting Kevin during a challenging time last year. He has come a long way through strength, determination, and the right support. Last week, he shared some of his story with us and told us how he learned about us. Here is an excerpt from what he shared: "After being accepted into the carpentry program there, I learned that I needed tools and boots. I remember sitting there, lost, not knowing how I could afford them, and then my student advisor told me about a place called SMALL SUMS. At the time, I had no support system and no one to help when I first met the good people at Small Sums. I came in looking for a pair of boots, and I was met by some of the most genuine people I've ever met in my life. The atmosphere in that office changed my life, honestly. The conversations I had with the staff and the help I received were life-changing. I not only received the boots and tools that I needed, but also received extra clothing and a much-needed gas card at the time. I honestly felt like these people cared about me and truly wanted to see me succeed. Ever since that day, I've carried and kept everything they gave me. Still to this day, the generosity, the kindness, and the opportunity to make them proud live in my head and in my heart." Echoing Kevin's words, thank you to our staff for serving our workers with dignity and respect, for taking the time to get to know them, celebrate them, and encourage them.
