Minutes, even seconds, make a difference in emergency medical services. Our EMS team is saving time and lives – and advancing emergency care – by giving whole blood to patients with severe trauma before going to a hospital. Until recently, whole blood, which contains red blood cells, plasma and platelets, was used exclusively in hospitals. Thanks to an innovative partnership with Regions EMS and Regions Hospital, we’re now the second EMS program in Minnesota – and one of only a few in the Midwest – to provide this lifesaving intervention to patients in the east metro and western Wisconsin. Our team picked up its first delivery of whole blood from the hospital in late April. A “zero waste” process ensures every unit of blood is used, moving patients seamlessly from the community to Regions. With whole blood, statistics show survivability in hemorrhagic shock improves dramatically, making every moment count.
