Description

Orient Land Trust

Orient Land Trust (OLT) is a nonprofit organization based in Colorado, dedicated to the preservation of natural resources, wildlife habitat, open space, and historic features in the northern San Luis Valley. Founded in 2001 by Neil and Terry Seitz, OLT emerged from their donation of extensive properties, including Valley View Hot Springs, Orient Mine, and Everson Ranch. This donation was driven by a vision to preserve these unique landscapes for the benefit of all, rather than keeping them under private ownership.

Mission and Activities

OLT's mission is multifaceted, aiming to:

  • Promote a positive clothing-optional experience: OLT encourages a non-erotic setting that fosters inclusiveness and diversity, promoting body acceptance and respect for others at its properties, including Valley View Hot Springs, Orient Mine, and Everson Ranch.
  • Preserve natural and cultural resources: The trust works to protect the viewshed, acquire land, and safeguard natural, wild, agricultural, and historic resources in the region.
  • Support education and enjoyment: By preserving these areas, OLT aims to contribute to the well-being and education of current and future generations.

Conservation Efforts

The organization owns approximately 1,780 acres of land and has protected an additional 480 acres through various means. Orient Land Trust is a member of the Land Trust Alliance and is Terrafirma insured, highlighting its commitment to long-term land conservation.

Community and Community Activities

OLT engages with the community by offering opportunities for visitors to participate in activities such as hiking, birding, and volunteering. Volunteers can contribute through trail maintenance, cleanup events, administrative tasks, and guiding tours.

Governance and Structure

As a nonprofit, OLT operates on the principles of transparency and accountability. It is recognized as a "large organization" within the environmental category due to its extensive land holdings and activities.

History

The foundation of Orient Land Trust marked a significant change in land management, shifting from private ownership to a model focused on communal stewardship. This shift was inspired by the Seitz's belief that these resources are too valuable to be controlled by any individual, reflecting their commitment to preserving the land for public enjoyment and educational purposes.

Welcome to Orient Land Trust Never thought of ourselves as owners so much as stewards. It just made sense to share Terry Seitz In 2001 Neil and Terry Seitz the owners of Valley View Hot Springs for thirtyfive years founded the Orient Land Trust. Their deep commitment to preserving the Everson Ranch Valley View Hot Springs and the Orient Mine and their belief that these resources are too valuable to be owned by any individual led to the creation of the Orient Land Trust. Seitzs selfless donation of these properties laid the groundwork for preserving extensive unbroken landscapes and implementing numerous innovative ways to utilize warm waterways across Valley View Hot Springs.
