What do both Hebrew Rehabilitation Center campuses have in common? Quite a lot! One of those commonalities is the presence of many amazing moms, who each site celebrated in fun ways this past week. The day at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center - Boston started with the annual tradition of Mother’s Day Bingo, followed by a special concert performance by Lenny Weiner. The rest of the day, patients listened to Mother’s Day-themed music, discussed the amazing mothers in their lives, and snapped photos in front of a lovely pink backdrop. At Hebrew Rehabilitation Center - NewBridge, patients enjoyed a concert performance by the duo of Life Enhancement Coordinator Emily Perlman and her daughter, Liana, who is currently pursuing a master’s degree in choral conducting at Georgia State University. The concert included solo performances by Liana in German, Italian, and English, mother-daughter duets with Emily playing guitar, and songs featuring Liana’s friend Toby on piano. Highlights included “Out of My Dreams” from Oklahoma!, “Teach Your Children,” by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, and a rousing finale of everyone singing “Hallelujah” by Milk and Honey. (fb)

Hebrew SeniorLife recently celebrated 25 years of offering services for Russian-speaking older adults. More than 150 people attended the event at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in Boston, including staff, family members, volunteers, and donors. The night started with opening remarks from Director of Bilingual Services Alexandra Dashevskaya, who briefly summarized the program’s many accomplishments over the past 25 years. “Our program is unique because it not only provides language support and culturally-appropriate care, but it also has become a place where patients feel safe and part of a family,” says Alexandra, who began the program in 2000. “I remember when we had two patients and no bilingual staff. I’m grateful to have led this program since the beginning, and appreciate how much the sense of community has grown along with our staff and service offerings.” The evening also included remarks from Dr. Ernest Mandel, executive vice president for health care and chief medical officer, along with a roundtable discussion with Lunder CareForce Institute Executive Vice President Tammy Retalic, Associate Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kent Bakaev, and a patient’s family member. The roundtable was moderated by trustee and long-time volunteer Galina Khatutsky. Attendees also watched a video featuring interviews with bilingual staff, stories from family members, and information about the program’s impact on patients. Thanks to the generosity of our many donors, the event raised $100,000 to benefit our services for Russian-speaking older adults. The donations will help fund concerts, holiday ceremonies, culturally appropriate events, new equipment, and more. Hebrew SeniorLife offers culturally competent services for Russian-speaking older adults throughout our continuum, including in long-term chronic care at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center. These services feature staff members who are fluent in both English and Russian, and programming that promotes the physical, intellectual, and spiritual well-being of Russian-speaking patients and residents.
