Overview
The East Berlin Historical Preservation Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, conservation, and education of historical sites and cultural heritage in East Berlin, Pennsylvania, and its surrounding areas. Established in 1975, the society has been instrumental in maintaining the historical integrity of the town.
History
East Berlin, located in Adams County, Pennsylvania, has a rich history dating back to 1764 when it was founded by John Frankenberger, who named it after his hometown in Prussia (Germany). Over the years, the town evolved, officially becoming East Berlin in 1827 to distinguish it from another town named Berlin in Somerset County. The East Berlin Historical Preservation Society was formed to protect and promote this unique heritage.
Activities
The society is responsible for maintaining several historic buildings in East Berlin. These include:
- Red Men’s Hall
- Church / School House
- Log House
- Swigart’s Mill
- Liberty #1 Engine House
Until 2017, the society hosted the Colonial Day, an outdoor festival showcasing historic crafts and entertainment. It continues to organize a biennial Christmas House Tour and an annual Christmas Craft Sale, providing opportunities for community engagement and historical education.
Educational Efforts
The East Berlin Historical Preservation Society offers educational opportunities, allowing visitors to learn about the local history and culture through its managed sites and events. This approach not only preserves the past but also fosters a sense of community and cultural appreciation.
Tax Status
The East Berlin Historical Preservation Society is tax-exempt and has been since July 1981, with the Employer Identification Number (EIN) 23-2156609. This status allows the society to collect donations and support its mission through charitable contributions.
