On this day in 1918, Ensign (Highest Rank: Lieutenant Commander) Daniel Sullivan went above and beyond the call of duty while serving our nation during World War I, for which he would later receive the Medal of Honor. For extraordinary heroism as an officer of the U.S.S. Christabel in conflict with an enemy submarine on May 21, 1918. As a result of the explosion of a depth bomb dropped near the submarine, the Christabel was so badly shaken that a number of depth charges which had been set for firing were thrown about the deck and there was imminent danger that they would explode. Sullivan immediately fell on the depth charges and succeeded in securing them, thus saving the ship from disaster, which would inevitably have caused great loss of life. Preserving stories like Sullivan’s is essential—not only to honor their sacrifice but to inspire future generations with examples of valor, integrity, and service. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society is committed to ensuring these incredible acts of bravery are never forgotten and continue to serve as a beacon of hope and resilience for our nation. (fb)

On this day in 1927, Captain (Highest Rank: Brigadier General) Charles Lindbergh went above and beyond the call of duty while serving our nation during the Interim 1920-1940, for which he would later receive the Medal of Honor. For displaying heroic courage and skill as a navigator, at the risk of his life, by his nonstop flight in his airplane, the Spirit of St. Louis, from New York City to Paris, France, May 20-21, 1927, by which Lindbergh not only achieved the greatest individual triumph of any American citizen but demonstrated that travel across the ocean by aircraft was possible. Preserving stories like Lindbergh’s is essential—not only to honor their sacrifice but to inspire future generations with examples of valor, integrity, and service. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society is committed to ensuring these incredible acts of bravery are never forgotten and continue to serve as a beacon of hope and resilience for our nation. (fb)
